Summary and Suggestion

 SEA-Teacher Batch 9

A. Purpose of Practice

The SEA Teacher Project or the “Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia” is a project that aims to provide opportunities for pre-service student teachers from universities in Southeast Asia to have teaching experiences (practicum) in schools in other countries in Southeast Asia.

The aim of practicum is to train teaching skills so that you can become a reliable teacher, practice English language skills, gain experience in teaching which can be used as a provision for the future and increase understanding of the differences in school management between Indonesia and the target country. in this case the Philippines

Here I learned a lot from corporate teachers, friends, LSHS students, all LSHS teachers, and friends in the Philippines. The important point that I learned in this practicum is that as a teacher we are required to be able to liven up the class, educate and teach ethics which is done systematically and with love because the aim of teaching is to provide understanding to students so that they can humanize humans through the knowledge they have gained.

B. Procedures of practice

The duration of this practicum is 1 month which is divided into 3 sessions. The first session or first week is observation week where we carry out observations at the school where we teach. We coordinate with corporate teachers regarding the curriculum used, lesson plans, and methods used in the learning process. Not only listening, but we also make lesson plans according to the format that applies at school. The second week and third week are the times to do teaching demonstrations in class where we teach students in classes that have been determined by the school, in this case the LSHS school. The fourth week is the time for evaluation where corporate teachers provide assessments, suggestions and input as material to become better at teaching in the future. On the last Sunday there was also a closing ceremony to appreciate student delegations who had served in that country. During the week we also have the opportunity to visit tourist attractions or historical places such as museums, beaches, malls, souvenir shops and various other recreational areas. The goal is so that we can explore many places and make beautiful memories that will not be forgotten

C. Outcomes of practice

This student exchange activity certainly provides many benefits for oneself. I always believe that if I don't feel the benefits now it doesn't mean this activity is useless, it's true not now but we will feel the benefits in the future. Various benefits obtained include:

  1. Through this activity I can practice my English skills from limited to better. To be honest, I learned English autodidactically but didn't think I could go this far to teach in international classes.
  2. This activity provides an opportunity to improve teaching skills. Of course, as a teaching student, teaching is the most important things.
  3. Increase self-confidence to interact and communicate in front of students
  4. Increase experience and expand relationships with international friends
  5. Know the differences in teaching between Indonesia and the Philippines, education systems, learning methods and infrastructure used in the learning process
  6. Various information about the culture of each country

D. The Challenge of Practice

The challenge I face as a student majoring in biology education is teaching classes using English. This makes it difficult for me because Indonesia and the Philippines are different. The Philippines uses a mixture of English and Tagalog, whereas in Indonesia, especially in my province, we only use English during English lessons so I'm not very used to speaking English. However, that doesn't mean I can't speak English, I always study to improve my English. Apart from that, another challenge that I face is that I have to study harder because the students at LSHS on average have intelligent skills so I have to study more deeply regarding the material that will be presented in order to be seen as a professional teacher.

E. Overall Impression

I really enjoy student exchange activities to the Philippines because there are many interesting things that I get every day. The cultural differences between the two countries amazed me even though I got some culture shock. But, I think it is a natural thing that it is important that we can tolerate and adapt to their culture without eliminating our own country's culture. I am very proud of myself for being part of SEAMEO Sea Teacher Batch 9. I thought that people who could go abroad were only for rich people but apparently not because SEAMEO gave me the opportunity to gain a lot of experience. Of course this is lucky for me because a dream 3 years ago has come true. One thing I am sure of is "God never exchanges the fortune of his servants, every mass has its people and every person has its masses". For this reason, I am fully grateful to SEAMEO for the golden opportunity that has been given to me. We hope that SEAMEO will always be successful in being at the forefront of young people who contribute to Indonesia and the progress of education in Indonesia.

F. Suggestions for Future Improvement

In my opinion, there are no suggestions for further improvement because until now I am very grateful to be part of SEAMEO. I just want to say thank you to Cavite State University, Philippines for accepting me. I also thank all the staff and students at Laboratory Science High School who have given me a golden opportunity to develop into a professional teacher in the future. I also thank Halu Oleo University for trusting me to be a UHO delegate to the Philippines. Thank you very much to my parents and family who tried their best so that I could go to the Philippines. And thank you to my friends who always support the steps i choose.
