Teaching Practice
Me and The Way I Teach
The beginning of the story has just begun. This is the most important part of my story. When entering the classroom, class X Masunurin and Maasahan students gave a warm welcome. At first I was a little nervous but until the end of the evaluation week I always enjoyed it because I always said to myself "you can definitely do it, there's nothing you can't do as long as we try".
A. Procedures of Teaching
The curriculum at LSHS emphasizes a student-centered learning process or what is usually called student-centered learning. So that in the learning process the teacher only acts as a facilitator who facilitates students to think critically, find solutions and solve problems. The things that are done must of course be based on the lesson plan that has been created so that learning activities take place in an orderly and systematic manner.
1. Say hello, check students' attendance, and ask how they are that day
2. Review the previous material by asking several questions
3. Explain the topic title of the material discussed
4. Provide motivation through pictures and ask them to guess and explain the meaning of the picture and its relationship to the material to be taught
5. Display learning material using ppt on the monitor and display a video related to the material, then ask students to describe the process and meaning of the video
6. Conduct group discussions and give students the opportunity to ask questions and submit opinions or rebuttals
7. Give group assignments in the form of questions in the form of puzzles as reinforcement if they have understood the material
8. Ask students to conclude the material
9. The teacher concludes the learning material and gives assignments to be done at home.
10. The teacher closes the class with greetings
B. Time Management and Organizing Activity
The first session is apperception and motivation which lasts for 10 minutes. The process of presenting material and learning activities lasts for 100 minutes and the closing process which contains conclusion drawing activities lasts for 10 minutes. In the learning process I divide time for students to conduct group discussions.
a. 30 minute presentation of material
b. Group discussion for 40 minutes
c. Ice breaking 5 minutes
e. Doing assignments in the form of Crossword puzzle games for 25 minutes
During the discussion process, I always monitor them to focus on working on group assignments together. Give them the opportunity to ask questions if there is something they don't know. In the group discussion process, I try to be a moderator who helps them voice their opinions and express their respective answers so that not much time is wasted. When they answer incorrectly, it is my job to correct and explain the correct answer.
C. Problem Solving
I complete all the activities in the lesson plan at each meeting because I can manage the time given. However, because the learning process lasts 2 hours, sometimes they get bored in the middle, therefore I sometimes do ice breaking to attract their attention and raise their enthusiasm. In the group discussion process, some team members did not work together and my job there was to approach them and tell them that the task had to be done together. I also always monitor them during group discussions so that if they have difficulties, I can help them overcome them. when answering questions their voices were so small that other friends couldn't hear them. but I always try to encourage them to raise their voices. To be honest, there weren't many problems encountered because the students in the class were very orderly, polite and understood the rules that had been mutually agreed upon at the start of the meeting.
D.Classroom Management
To maximize the learning process so that it takes place effectively and efficiently, the teacher's job is to be able to know the situation and conditions of the students.
- Make preparations. As a teacher who wants to teach in class, you should have prepared various kinds of needs starting from learning media, learning materials, lesson plans, evaluations for students and the methods that will be used. Preparation is very important so that the learning process takes place regularly and smoothly
- Before starting the learning process, it is a good idea to carry out a learning contract. This means that there are rules that teachers and students must obey during the learning process. For example, during the observation week I was given the opportunity to meet the class I would teach. On that day we decided what rules must be obeyed together with the aim of making the learning process run well
- Before starting class, try to grab the students' attention first. There are many ways that can be done, for example I raise my voice when starting the lesson and walk in the middle of them when explaining the material, make some jokes and so on.
- Must understand the situation and conditions of students. There are times when students become bored in class so they don't pay attention to the teacher's explanation. Therefore, the step we can take is to do icebreaking. I always do this to keep them relaxed and focused on the material being presented
- Always give students the opportunity to ask and answer questions. For example, I always ask them which parts they don't understand or I immediately ask them for their response as to whether the part was understood or not.
- Provide an interesting evaluation but still fit the objectives in the lesson plan. For example, I gave them an evaluation in the form of a crossword puzzle to check whether they really understood the material being taught or not.Lastly, I always give them appreciation when answering questions by giving them applause and giving them candy that I brought from Indonesia. On observation week I also taught them "Clap salute and clap good job" as a form of appreciation to their friends who answered or asked a question
E. Overall impression of teaching
From the bottom of my heart, I am very happy when I teach them in class because they are intelligent students, they already know and look for references related to the material to be taught. This certainly makes it easier for teachers to provide explanations. Not only that, the students in the class looked very active and enthusiastic when answering questions, so it made me a little surprised by what I saw. They competed to answer as if a quiz competition was taking place. I salute the enthusiasm for learning of those who study from 7 am to 6 pm.
